First Time Backpacking to Mount Bromo - Any Tips & Tricks?
About This Discussion
Hi everyone!
I'm planning my first backpacking trip to Mount Bromo and would love to hear advice from travelers who have already been there.
I'm looking for beginner-friendly tips, such as the best way to get there on a budget, what essentials to pack, how cold it gets before sunrise, and whether it's better to stay overnight or take a midnight tour. I'd also appreciate recommendations on viewpoints, local food, transportation, and any mistakes I should avoid.
If you've visited Mount Bromo as a backpacker, please share your experience and practical tips. Your advice will definitely help first-time visitors like me plan a smoother and more enjoyable trip.
Thanks in advance, and happy travels!

I visited Mount Bromo last year, and my biggest tip is to wear layers. It can be surprisingly cold before sunrise, especially if you're riding a jeep. A warm jacket, gloves, and a beanie made a huge difference.
@ida_rt Thanks! I didn't realize it could get that cold. I'll definitely pack extra layers and gloves.
If you're backpacking, try staying in Cemoro Lawang instead of taking a one-day trip. You'll have more time to explore the area, enjoy the sunrise without rushing, and save energy.
@helenamoreira That sounds like a better plan. I'd rather enjoy the experience than feel rushed.
Bring cash with you. Some small food stalls, local shops, and parking areas don't accept cards or digital payments, so cash is very useful.
@diis_marietremblay Good reminder! I'll make sure to withdraw enough cash before heading there.
Don't forget to bring a face mask or buff. The volcanic sand and dust can get pretty intense, especially during the dry season or when many jeeps are passing by.
@halil_ibrahim_koc That's really helpful. I almost forgot about the dust, so I'll add a mask to my packing list.
Try to arrive at the viewpoint early. The popular spots fill up quickly before sunrise, and arriving earlier gives you a much better place to enjoy the view and take photos.
@garyshu Great tip! Waking up earlier sounds worth it for the sunrise.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip. The sand near the crater can be slippery, and proper footwear makes the walk much easier.
@eduardo_saverin Thanks! I was thinking of wearing regular sneakers, but hiking shoes seem like the better choice.
Pack a reusable water bottle and some light snacks. There are food stalls around, but having your own water and snacks is convenient during the early morning hike.
@yinameiling That's a smart idea. I'll bring enough water and snacks so I don't have to rely on finding a shop early in the morning.
Tips ala aku dana terbatas trip ke bromo :
● Motoran kalau bisa ngajak temen, untuk low budget nya minim banget alasan ngajak temen bisa lebih hemat karna bisa patungan.
● Enaknya kalau opentrip itu barang bawaannya nggak terlalu bnyak, cukup bawak barang buat safety kmu sendiri aja, tapi kalau soal harga iyaa lumayan sih.
Kalau menginap tergantung tempat tinggal asal temen - temen iya, contoh kyak aku tinggalnya di Surabaya 1 hari aja cukup nggak perlu menginap karna tujuannya hanya ke area kawasan bromo dan air terjun madakaripura.
Kalau soal makanan di tempat wisata jangan kaget sma harga nya agak mahal dikit, tapi untuk rasa nggak kaleng - kaleng tetap enak banget.
Untuk barang bawakaan jangan terlalu banyak malah jadi ribet.
Cukup bawa :
● Kacamata Hitam
● Obat - obatan pribadi.
● Sepatu.
