Discovering One of Indonesia’s Wildest Oceans

I’ve recently been looking into Cenderawasih Bay (Teluk Cenderawasih) in West Papua, and the place looks absolutely unreal.

Crystal-clear water, remote islands, and the chance to swim with whale sharks near traditional fishing platforms (bagan). It seems like one of those destinations where nature still feels truly untouched.

But it’s also quite remote compared to other Indonesian travel spots.

So I’m curious how it feels for solo travelers.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

One of the most famous experiences in Cenderawasih Bay is swimming with whale sharks that gather around the fishermen’s bagan platforms.

From what I’ve read, the sharks come close because fishermen often share small fish with them.

It sounds like an incredible wildlife encounter, but I wonder:

• How ethical and natural does the interaction feel in person?

• Is it easy to arrange this trip independently as a solo traveler?

Traveling Solo in a Remote Marine National Park

Cenderawasih Bay National Park is huge and relatively undeveloped.

That’s part of its appeal, but it also makes me wonder about logistics.
