About This Discussion

I’m planning a solo trip around Herzegovina-Neretva Canton and one thing I’m really looking forward to is trying authentic Balkan food. 🥘

I’d love to explore local restaurants, bakeries, and small family-run spots rather than only tourist places. I’m especially curious about trying ćevapi, burek, dolma, grilled meats, and local cheeses while discovering the food culture around Mostar and nearby towns.

For travelers who have been here, what local dishes or food spots would you recommend? Any tips for finding authentic places, ordering as a solo traveler, or knowing what specialties are worth trying?

Would also love to hear about any memorable local food experiences you had in Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. 🥰

If you’re in Mostar, definitely try ćevapi with fresh somun bread. It’s simple but so good! I also recommend trying burek from a local bakery for breakfast.

@abizard That sounds perfect for a solo food trip! I’ll definitely add ćevapi and burek to my list. Thanks for the tip!

Don’t only stick to restaurants around the Old Bridge. Walk a little farther and look for small local places. Prices are often better and the atmosphere feels more authentic.

@elifyilmaz Great advice! I actually prefer smaller local spots when traveling. I’ll explore beyond the main tourist area.

Try local grilled meats and homemade cheese if you get the chance. Portions can be quite generous, so ordering smaller dishes when traveling solo might be a good idea.

@danielcooper Good to know! I’ll keep the portion sizes in mind. It would be nice to try several dishes without ordering too much.

If you have time, explore food markets or ask locals where they usually eat. Some of the best Balkan food experiences can come from recommendations rather than online reviews.

@diis_marietremblay Absolutely! Asking locals sounds like the best way to discover something authentic. I’ll definitely do that during my trip.
