About This Discussion

I'm planning a backpacking trip to Vietnam and I'm curious about the nightlife. How is it after dark? Are the bars, clubs, and live music venues worth visiting?

For those who have been there, did you feel safe walking around at night? Are there any areas or scams that backpackers should be aware of?

I'd love to hear your experiences, recommendations, and safety tips. Which city has the best nightlife in Vietnam?

I spent a few nights in Ho Chi Minh City, and the nightlife was much more lively than I expected. Bui Vien Walking Street is full of bars, live music, and street performances. It can get very crowded, so I recommend keeping your phone and wallet in a secure place. Other than that, I felt comfortable walking around with friends, and the locals were generally friendly.

@tengkusintya Thanks for sharing! Bui Vien is definitely on my list. I'll make sure to keep my belongings safe, especially in crowded areas. Did you find any quieter bars nearby that you would recommend?

@garyshu You're welcome! If you're looking for a quieter atmosphere near Bui Vien, you can try some rooftop bars or small cafés around District 1. They usually have a more relaxed vibe where you can enjoy a drink, chat, and still experience the energy of the city without the big crowds.

I visited Hanoi as a solo backpacker, and I actually preferred its nightlife over Ho Chi Minh City. The Old Quarter has plenty of small bars, rooftop cafés, and places with live music. It felt more relaxed, and I never had any safety issues. I just avoided walking through empty streets late at night and always used ride-hailing apps to get back to my hostel.

@eduardo_saverin That sounds like my kind of atmosphere. I enjoy quieter places more than big party streets. Thanks for the tip about using ride-hailing apps I'll definitely do that.

@garyshu Glad the tip was helpful! I think using ride-hailing apps makes exploring Ho Chi Minh City at night much easier and more comfortable, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Hope you enjoy discovering the calmer side of the city!

One thing I would recommend is checking drink prices before ordering, especially in busy tourist areas. Most places are honest, but a few bars may charge higher prices if you're not paying attention. Also, always keep an eye on your drink and avoid accepting drinks from strangers. Basic travel awareness goes a long way.

@danielcooper Great advice! I usually check online reviews before choosing a bar, but I'll also make sure to ask about prices first. Better to avoid surprises.

@garyshu That's a great habit! Checking reviews and confirming prices beforehand can really help avoid uncomfortable situations. It also gives you more confidence to relax and enjoy the nightlife experience without worrying about unexpected costs.

If you're looking for nightlife that isn't just about drinking, Vietnam has plenty of options. I really enjoyed the night markets, riverside cafés, food streets, and live acoustic performances. It was a great way to experience the local culture while still enjoying the city after dark. I think it's perfect for backpackers who want a more relaxed evening.

@phamhuanglong That's exactly what I'm looking for! I enjoy local food and live music more than clubs, so I'll definitely check out the night markets and riverside cafés. Thanks for the recommendation!

@garyshu You're welcome! I think you'll really enjoy the night markets and riverside cafés. They’re great places to taste local food, listen to live performances, and experience the city’s atmosphere in a more authentic way. Hope you have an amazing time in Vietnam!
