Backpacking at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park - Any Tips or Stories?
About This Discussion
I recently visited Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park while backpacking around Hawaii, and seeing Kīlauea up close was an unforgettable experience. The steaming crater and lava landscape were unlike anything I've seen before.

I visited Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park last year, and it ended up being the highlight of my Hawaii trip. I highly recommend walking the Crater Rim area and, if it's open, the Kīlauea Iki Trail. The volcanic landscape is incredible and completely different from the beaches people usually associate with Hawaii. I also stayed until after sunset because seeing the glow from Halemaʻumaʻu Crater was absolutely worth it. Just remember to check the latest park alerts before you go since trail access can change due to volcanic activity.
@dev_sadhil Thanks for sharing! Staying until sunset sounds like a great idea. I'll definitely check the latest park updates before visiting and hope I get lucky enough to see the crater glowing too.
I'm planning to visit Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park during my backpacking trip later this year. Is one full day enough to explore the main attractions? Also, would you recommend renting a car, or are there any budget-friendly transportation options from Hilo?
@ida_rt From what I've learned, having a rental car is the easiest option because the park is quite large and public transportation is very limited. One full day should be enough for the main viewpoints and a short hike, but two days would let you explore at a more relaxed pace.
This place has been on my bucket list for a long time! I'm thinking about visiting next spring. Do you have any recommendations on what to bring? Is the weather cold near the crater, and are hiking shoes really necessary?
@phamhuanglong I'd definitely bring comfortable hiking shoes, a light jacket, sunscreen, and plenty of water. The weather can change quickly, especially in the morning or evening, and some trails are uneven because of the old lava rock. Better to be prepared so you can enjoy the experience comfortably.
