I recently visited Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park while backpacking around Hawaii, and seeing Kīlauea up close was an unforgettable experience. Hiking Volcanoes National Park: Tips Before You Go

I’ve been researching Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and the more I read about it, the more it feels like one of those places that every nature lover should experience at least once. From lush rainforest trails to the chance of seeing mountain gorillas, the park looks absolutely incredible. I’m especially interested in the volcano hiking routes, but I also realized there are quite a few things to prepare before going. So I thought it would be helpful to start a discussion here. What to Know Before Hiking in Volcanoes National Park From what I’ve learned so far, hiking in Volcanoes National Park is not just a casual walk in the forest. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and sometimes unpredictable because of the weather. A few things that seem important: 👉🏻 Permits are required, especially for gorilla trekking 👉🏻 The trails can be very muddy, even during the dry season 👉🏻 A local guide is mandatory for most hikes 👉🏻 Weather in the mountains can change quickly It sounds like preparation really makes a difference here. Popular Hiking Experiences in the Park Some hikes that caught my attention include: Mount Bisoke Crater Lake Hike This trail leads to a beautiful crater lake at the summit, and the views look incredible. Mount Karisimbi Trek One of the highest volcanoes in the Virunga range, usually done as a two-day trek. Gorilla Trekking Not exactly a traditional hike, but definitely one of the most famous wildlife experiences in the world.
