The first thing I noticed about Surabaya was not its busy streets or modern buildings. It was the energy of its people.

Surabaya feels alive from morning until late at night. Motorcycles move quickly through the streets, food vendors prepare meals with the sound of sizzling oil, and conversations happen everywhere. The city can feel busy and loud, but somehow, beneath all that movement, there is a warmth that makes you want to stay a little longer.

For me, experiencing Surabaya like a local meant slowing down and paying attention to the simple moments.

Starting the Morning Like a Local

I started my day early, when the air was still relatively cool and the streets had not yet reached their busiest hours. One of the best ways to understand Surabaya is through its food.

For breakfast, I visited a local food stall and tried traditional dishes such as lontong balap, rawon, and nasi pecel. Eating at a small warung felt very different from dining at a restaurant. People came and went quickly, greeting the food seller and chatting with strangers at nearby tables.

The food was simple, affordable, and full of character.

Most local meals can cost around IDR 15,000 to IDR 40,000 per person, depending on where and what you eat. Street food is one of the easiest ways to experience the authentic rhythm of Surabaya.

Walking Through Markets and Everyday Life

Later, I explored one of Surabaya's traditional markets. The market was colorful, crowded, and full of movement. Fresh vegetables, spices, snacks, flowers, and household items filled almost every corner.

What I enjoyed most was observing the interactions between people.

Sellers called out to customers, neighbors stopped to talk, and everyone seemed to know someone. Even as a visitor, I felt welcomed when I smiled and tried to communicate in Indonesian.

Surabaya locals are known for being direct and expressive, but behind that strong personality is often a genuine sense of friendliness and humor.

A Small Cultural Tip That Made My Experience Better

When visiting local markets, warungs, or traditional neighborhoods, I found that being polite and respectful made a big difference. A simple greeting such as "Permisi," "Terima kasih," or "Monggo" can create a warmer interaction.

Surabaya also has its own local expressions and strong East Javanese character. Don't be surprised if conversations sound energetic the louder tone is often simply part of the local communication style.

Always ask permission before taking close-up photos of people, especially vendors, elderly locals, or those participating in religious activities.

Exploring Surabaya by Public Transportation

Getting around Surabaya was easier than I expected.

I used a combination of city buses, online transportation services, and walking. Surabaya's public transportation continues to develop, while ride-hailing services are convenient for reaching places that are farther apart.

For shorter distances, walking allowed me to notice details I might have otherwise missed: old buildings, local coffee shops, street murals, and small food stalls hidden between busy roads.

Transportation costs vary depending on the route and service, but local public transportation can be an affordable option. Online motorcycle taxis are also popular for navigating Surabaya's busy streets.

The Best Time to Experience Surabaya

In my experience, the best time to visit Surabaya is during the drier months, generally from around May to October, when exploring the city on foot can feel more comfortable.

Early morning and late afternoon are my favorite times of the day. The sunlight becomes softer, temperatures feel less intense, and local life seems to slow down slightly.

If possible, avoid planning too many outdoor activities in the middle of the day, as Surabaya can become very hot.

More Than a City of Heroes

Surabaya is famous for its important role in Indonesian history, but my local experience showed me something beyond monuments and museums.

I found stories in small warungs.

I found culture in the voices of market sellers.

I found warmth in conversations with strangers.

And I found beauty in ordinary moments that never appeared in a travel brochure.

There is something special about visiting a city without rushing from one famous attraction to another. Surabaya reminded me that authentic travel is not always about finding the most beautiful view. Sometimes, it is about sitting with locals, tasting unfamiliar food, getting slightly lost, and allowing a city to introduce itself slowly.

For travelers who want to experience Indonesia beyond popular tourist destinations, Surabaya offers something honest, energetic, and deeply human.

Come with curiosity.

Come hungry.

And most importantly, come ready to listen.
