Belitung Island, Indonesia: Where the Sea Feels Like a Quiet Escape
"Belitung Island feels like the kind of place you visit to slow down. Between granite-covered beaches, clear turquoise water, quiet fishing villages, and warm local smiles, I found a side of Indonesia that felt beautifully simple and genuine."

There are places that make you want to take hundreds of photos, and there are places that make you forget about your phone for a while. For me, Belitung Island was definitely the second kind.
Located off the eastern coast of Sumatra, Belitung is known for its beautiful beaches, giant granite boulders, calm turquoise waters, and laid-back island atmosphere. But what stayed with me was not only the scenery. It was the feeling of being somewhere that still moved at a slower pace.
A Slow Journey Across Belitung
I started my journey by flying to H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport in Tanjung Pandan. From there, renting a car or hiring a local driver is one of the easiest ways to explore the island. Scooters can also be an option for travelers who are comfortable riding and want more freedom.
One of the highlights was visiting Tanjung Tinggi Beach. The huge granite rocks scattered along the shoreline made the landscape look almost unreal. I spent some time walking barefoot, watching the waves, and simply enjoying the quiet atmosphere.
More Than Just Beautiful Beaches
Island Hopping and Local Life
A trip to Belitung would not feel complete without island hopping. From the coast, travelers can take a traditional boat to nearby islands such as Batu Berlayar, Pasir Island, and Lengkuas Island.
At Lengkuas Island, the old lighthouse became one of my favorite spots. The view from above was beautiful, with endless blue water surrounding small islands and granite formations.
But Belitung is not only about beaches. I also enjoyed experiencing the local food and seeing everyday island life. Dishes influenced by Malay and Chinese traditions can be found around Tanjung Pandan. One food worth trying is Mie Belitung, a local noodle dish served with shrimp-based sauce. It is simple, comforting, and very much part of the island's character.
Practical Tips for Visiting Belitung
Transportation and Costs
The easiest way to reach Belitung is by air, with flights arriving at H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport. Within the island, travelers can rent a scooter, rent a car, or arrange a local driver.
Beach destinations generally have affordable entrance fees, often around IDR 5,000–20,000 per person, although prices can change. Island-hopping boat trips usually cost more and are often priced per boat rather than per person, so sharing with other travelers can make the experience more affordable.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Belitung is generally during the dry season, around April to October, when the weather is more suitable for beaches, island hopping, and outdoor activities. However, weather conditions can change, so checking the forecast before traveling is still important.
Respecting Local Culture
Belitung has a relaxed atmosphere, but it is still important to respect local customs. Dress modestly when visiting villages or religious places, ask permission before photographing people, and keep beaches and natural areas clean.
I also learned that traveling slowly can sometimes make a destination feel more meaningful. Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, I enjoyed stopping at small food stalls, talking with locals, and watching boats return from the sea.
Belitung eventually felt less like a checklist of tourist attractions and more like a quiet conversation with the island itself.
And perhaps that is what I loved most about it. The beaches were beautiful, but the peaceful rhythm of island life was what made me want to stay a little longer.
