Hunting Stories in Time: Antique Shopping at Jalan Surabaya, Jakarta

![Image](/images/stories/content/content-1778054039549-81374398.jpg) ## A Street Where Time Slows Down I didn’t come here just to shop I came to discover. Tucked in the heart of Menteng, Jalan Surabaya feels like stepping into a quiet timeline. Rows of antique stalls stretch along the street, each one filled with objects that seem to carry whispers from the past. Old cameras, vintage vinyl records, carved wooden statues, dusty books… Nothing here feels new, and somehow, that’s exactly the charm. ## Not Just Buying, But Finding ### Every Item Has a Story As I moved from one stall to another, I realized this wasn’t about price tags. It was about connection. A seller handed me an old coin and began telling me where it came from. Another showed me a typewriter that still worked, its keys echoing softly as if it remembered every word ever written on it. You don’t just buy things here you inherit fragments of history. ## The Art of Bargaining & Wandering There’s a rhythm to Jalan Surabaya. You walk slowly. You pause often. You bargain not aggressively, but almost like a conversation. And somewhere between curiosity and negotiation, you find something that feels like it was meant for you. ## Let’s Talk - Your Hidden Finds? I’m curious 👉🏻 Have you ever been to Jalan Surabaya? 👉🏻 What’s the most unique antique you’ve ever found while traveling? 👉🏻 Do you prefer collecting meaningful items or just enjoying the experience? If you were here with me, I feel like we’d spend hours just wandering, pointing at random objects, and sharing stories behind them. Let’s talk 👇

I enjoy both, but meaningful items feel more special because they carry memories and stories from the journey. Sometimes though, the experience itself becomes the best souvenir.

@Firman Maulana I agree with this so much. Sometimes a simple item can instantly bring back the feeling of a place, the people we met, or even small moments during the trip. But at the same time, some journeys become unforgettable even without bringing anything home except the memory itself.
