Capturing the Energy of Rock Climbing at Alien Bloc Edinburgh

I recently spent some time at Alien Bloc in Edinburgh, not as a climber this time, but behind the camera. As a photographer, indoor climbing gyms are fascinating spaces. The movements are dynamic, the routes are colorful, and every climber tells a story through motion, balance, and focus. I found myself trying to capture those exact moments the tension before a move, the stretch for the next hold, and the split-second expressions when climbers reach the top. Why Rock Climbing is Great for Photography From a photography perspective, climbing gyms like Alien Bloc offer a lot of creative opportunities. • Strong body movement and action shots • Colorful holds and textured walls • Dramatic body positions mid-climb • Interesting lighting and shadows indoors But capturing the right moment is definitely challenging. Timing and angles make a huge difference. My Biggest Challenge Shooting Here One thing I noticed is that timing the decisive moment is not easy. Sometimes the best frame happens in less than a second, when the climber reaches for the next hold or shifts their weight. I experimented with different angles, shooting from below to emphasize height and movement. It created a more dramatic perspective. Still learning though. Curious About Your Approach For those who have photographed climbing or action sports, I’m curious: What camera settings work best for indoor climbing photography? Do you prioritize fast shutter speed, or do you sometimes go for motion blur to capture movement? And what angles do you usually use? Low angle from the ground? Side perspective on the wall? Or closer shots focusing on hands and holds? Would love to hear how others approach climbing photography, especially in indoor gyms like Alien Bloc. Looking forward to your thoughts. 📷🧗♂️
