About This Discussion

I'm planning a birdwatching trip to Colombia! 🐦

What birds should I look out for? I'd love to spot colorful species like toucans, hummingbirds, parrots, tanagers, or any rare endemic birds.

If you've been birdwatching in Colombia, please share your favorite bird sightings and the best places to see them. I'd love to hear your recommendations!

If you're visiting Colombia for birdwatching, I highly recommend Los Nevados National Natural Park and the Coffee Region. I saw Andean Cock-of-the-rock, several colorful tanagers, mountain toucans, and dozens of hummingbird species. The best time to go is early in the morning when birds are most active. Bringing binoculars and hiring a local birding guide made a huge difference because they knew exactly where to find the rare species and could identify birds by their calls.

@garyshu Thanks so much for the recommendation! Los Nevados and the Coffee Region sound amazing. I hadn't considered hiring a local guide, but it definitely seems worth it if they can help spot rare birds. I'll make sure to start my birdwatching early in the morning as well.

Don't miss RĂo Claro Nature Reserve or the Santa Marta region if you have enough time. Colombia has more bird species than almost any other country, so every area offers something unique. I was lucky enough to see emerald hummingbirds, colorful parrots, toucans, and several endemic birds that can only be found in Colombia. Wear neutral-colored clothing, stay quiet, and be patient. Those simple tips really increased the number of birds I was able to see.

@eduardo_saverin That's incredibly helpful! I love the idea of visiting different regions to see a wider variety of birds. I'll definitely pack neutral-colored clothes and take my time instead of rushing through the trails. Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to spot some endemic species too!
