The Moment I First Saw It
I had seen the photos before. Bright pink. Almost unreal. Almost artificial.
But nothing prepared me for the moment the small aircraft tilted its wing and I saw it below me, a soft, glowing lake blushing in the middle of untouched wilderness.
Lake Hillier did not look loud. It looked quiet. Confident. Certain of its color.
A perfect oval of pink, resting beside the deep blue Southern Ocean, separated only by a thin line of white sand and dense green forest. Three colors. One island. Absolute harmony.
And suddenly, I felt very small.
Floating Between Blue and Pink
From above, the contrast was surreal.
On one side, the endless sapphire of the ocean, powerful and restless. On the other, a still, cotton-candy lake, calm and unmoving.
It felt like standing between two emotions:
The wildness of adventure. And the softness of wonder.
The pilot explained that the pink color comes from microalgae and salt-loving bacteria thriving in its hypersaline waters. Science made sense of it.
But in that moment, logic didn’t matter.
It simply felt magical.
A Hidden Wonder of Western Australia
Lake Hillier lies on Middle Island, off the coast of Esperance in Western Australia. It is remote. Protected. Untouched.
There are no crowds. No boardwalks. No tourist noise.
Most visitors see it from the sky and perhaps that’s how it should be.
Some places are not meant to be conquered. They are meant to be admired.
What It Taught Me
As the plane circled once more, I realized something.
Not everything extraordinary needs to shout.
Lake Hillier doesn’t roar like a waterfall. It doesn’t tower like a mountain. It doesn’t sparkle like a city skyline.
It simply exists softly pink, quietly extraordinary.
And maybe that’s why it stays with you.
Would I Go Again?
Yes. Without hesitation.
Not just to see the pink lake again, but to feel that stillness. That reminder that the world still holds secrets and some of them are gentler than we expect.
If you ever find yourself in Western Australia, take the flight. Look down. And let the Earth surprise you.
