Oaxaca City has a way of making you slow down.

Maybe it is the warm afternoon light falling across the cobblestone streets. Maybe it is the smell of freshly toasted corn drifting from a nearby market. Or perhaps it is the sound of conversations, music, and footsteps blending together in the historic center.

For me, one of the most memorable places to begin exploring Oaxaca was Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, an iconic Catholic church dating back to the 16th century.

The first time I saw its grand façade, I immediately understood why it has become one of Oaxaca's most recognizable landmarks. The architecture is dramatic without feeling distant, and once I stepped inside, the golden decoration seemed to glow softly around me.

It felt peaceful, almost timeless.

But what made the experience special was not simply visiting the church. It was walking through the surrounding historic center afterward, discovering Oaxaca through its food, people, markets, and mezcal culture.

Starting the Day at Santo Domingo

I arrived in the morning, when the streets around Centro were still relatively calm.

The church stands along the famous Calle de Macedonio Alcalá, one of the best streets for exploring Oaxaca's historic center on foot. I recommend taking your time here rather than rushing from one attraction to another.

Inside Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the Baroque interior is the main attraction. Intricate details, religious artwork, and gold-colored ornamentation create an atmosphere that feels incredibly rich.

Photography may be restricted during religious services, so it is worth being respectful and observing the signs.

After visiting the church, I continued walking through the historic center. The area is full of colonial buildings, small cafés, artisan shops, galleries, and quiet corners where you can simply sit and watch everyday life unfold.

A Slow Walk Through Oaxaca's Historic Center

Walking is one of the best ways to experience central Oaxaca.

Instead of following a strict itinerary, I wandered through the streets around Santo Domingo, stopping whenever something caught my attention.

The historic center is compact enough to explore on foot, while taxis are useful if you want to reach places farther away. Local buses and colectivos can also be used for longer journeys around Oaxaca City, although walking is often the most enjoyable option within Centro.

From Church Bells to the Food Markets

By lunchtime, my attention naturally shifted from architecture to food.

Oaxaca is famous for its food culture, and a food market crawl is one of the experiences I would not skip.

I started exploring local markets such as Mercado Benito Juárez and Mercado 20 de Noviembre, where the atmosphere is completely different from the peaceful interior of Santo Domingo.

There were stalls filled with colorful ingredients, handmade tortillas, fresh fruit, chocolate, spices, cheese, and traditional dishes.

I tried Oaxaca's famous tlayudas, a large toasted tortilla topped with ingredients such as beans, cheese, meat, and vegetables. I also looked for mole, one of the region's most iconic dishes.

What I loved most was the feeling of eating where locals eat. There was no polished restaurant atmosphere just busy stalls, sizzling food, friendly vendors, and the wonderful chaos of a Mexican market.

Eat Slowly, Talk to Vendors, Stay Curious

A market crawl in Oaxaca is more enjoyable when you don't try to taste everything at once.

Take small portions when possible, ask vendors about unfamiliar dishes, and be open to recommendations.

If you want to try something particularly local, look for regional specialties and seasonal ingredients. Oaxaca's food culture varies from one neighborhood and market stall to another, so part of the fun is discovering something unexpected.

Discovering Oaxaca's Mezcal Culture

No trip through Oaxaca feels complete to me without learning about mezcal.

Mezcal is deeply connected to the culture and traditions of Oaxaca, particularly through the many agave varieties used to produce it.

Rather than treating mezcal simply as a drink, I found it much more meaningful to learn about how it is made and why it matters to local communities.

A visit to a reputable mezcalería or a guided tasting can introduce you to different agave varieties, production methods, and flavor profiles.

The smoky character that many people associate with mezcal is only part of the story. Depending on the agave and production method, mezcal can have earthy, fruity, herbal, floral, or even mineral notes.

For a more authentic experience, I would choose a small guided tasting where the host explains the spirit's cultural background instead of simply ordering a shot.

When to Visit and What to Know

The best time to explore Oaxaca City is generally during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is often comfortable for walking.

For a quieter experience at Santo Domingo, visit in the morning or later in the afternoon. If you are planning a market crawl, arriving around lunchtime gives you plenty of food options, although markets can become busy.

Getting There

If you are already staying in Oaxaca's historic center, walking is the easiest way to reach Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

From Oaxaca International Airport, you can take an airport taxi or authorized shuttle into the city center. Taxis and local transportation are also available for reaching neighborhoods outside Centro.

The church itself is a religious site, so visitors should check current opening arrangements and avoid entering during restricted periods or services.

Entrance Fee and Costs

Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán generally does not require a standard admission ticket for worshippers and visitors, although access can vary depending on religious services or special events.

Budget separately for food, transportation, museum visits, and mezcal tastings. Guided mezcal experiences can vary considerably in price depending on the duration and location.

My Tips for an Authentic Oaxaca Experience

Oaxaca is a place where being a respectful traveler makes a real difference.

Dress modestly when entering churches, keep your voice low, and avoid photographing people without permission. At markets, ask before taking close-up photos of vendors or their products.

When buying handmade crafts, remember that many items represent generations of local knowledge and craftsmanship. Bargaining should be done respectfully rather than aggressively.

And when tasting mezcal, take your time. Listen to the story behind the drink, appreciate its complexity, and remember that you are experiencing part of a living cultural tradition.

By the end of the day, I realized that Santo Domingo was more than just a beautiful church.

It was the starting point of a much bigger experience.

The golden interior led me into the streets. The streets led me to the markets. The markets led me to Oaxaca's flavors, and those flavors eventually led me to mezcal.

That is what I loved most about Oaxaca City: everything seemed connected.

You arrive looking for a landmark, but you leave remembering the smell of grilled corn, the warmth of a tortilla in your hands, the glow of Baroque gold, and the quiet conversations that make a city feel alive.
